Summary

Darkness surged in his veins。 Power bled from her bones。

The battle on Sharr is over。 The Arz has fallen。 Altair may be captive, but Zafira, Nasir, and Kifah are bound for Sultan’s Keep, determined to finish the plan Altair set in motion: restoring the hearts of the Sisters of Old to the minarets of each caliphate, finally bringing magic to all of Arawiya。 But they are low on resources and allies alike, and the kingdom teems with fear of the Lion of the Night’s return。

As the zumra plots to overthrow Arawiya's darkest threat, Nasir fights to command the magic in his blood。 He must learn to hone his power, to wield it against not only the Lion but his father as well, trapped under the Lion’s control。 Zafira battles a very different darkness festering in her through her bond with the Jawarat—it hums with voices, pushing her to the brink of sanity and to the edge of a chaos she dares not unleash。 In spite of everything, Zafira and Nasir find themselves falling into a love they can’t stand to lose 。 。 。 But time is running out, and if order is to be restored, drastic sacrifices will have to be made。

Lush and striking, hopeful and devastating, We Free the Stars is the masterful conclusion to the Sands of Arawiya duology by New York Times–bestselling author Hafsah Faizal。

Felt contradictory。 Like there would be a stated rule or circumstance and then an immediate, random "but wait!" where it changed for some reason that didn't feel validated but more a way to move the plot along through structured tropes or bait for the readers。 While still written with beautiful phrases and wording throughout, it lacked the compelling storyline and earned surprises of the first book。 Any character growth felt artificial and underdeveloped。 I wanted to know what happened, but from Felt contradictory。 Like there would be a stated rule or circumstance and then an immediate, random "but wait!" where it changed for some reason that didn't feel validated but more a way to move the plot along through structured tropes or bait for the readers。 While still written with beautiful phrases and wording throughout, it lacked the compelling storyline and earned surprises of the first book。 Any character growth felt artificial and underdeveloped。 I wanted to know what happened, but from chapter 1 it felt very much like a chore, and I rarely felt engaged in the reading experience。 。。。more

A beautiful story。 Like other reviewers of this book, I was a little disappointed by how the main characters' story arcs ended。 A slow read for the first 2/3 but then picks up for the last 1/3 of the book。 I hope the two main characters learn to forgive themselves over time and grow together。 I felt like they didn't resolve their main internal conflicts at the end, but there seems to be hope。 A beautiful story。 Like other reviewers of this book, I was a little disappointed by how the main characters' story arcs ended。 A slow read for the first 2/3 but then picks up for the last 1/3 of the book。 I hope the two main characters learn to forgive themselves over time and grow together。 I felt like they didn't resolve their main internal conflicts at the end, but there seems to be hope。 。。。more

Slow plot, not much happens。 The chapters are long。 At one point, I almost gave up bc it was taking me too long to read。 I loved the characters - they were complex and not all boring。 I did expect more from Zafira and the Jawarat (I thought she was going to die lol)。 Wanted to see more of Nasir's shadow power。 I would totally recommend this series。 I'd also prefer a terminology guide。 Slow plot, not much happens。 The chapters are long。 At one point, I almost gave up bc it was taking me too long to read。 I loved the characters - they were complex and not all boring。 I did expect more from Zafira and the Jawarat (I thought she was going to die lol)。 Wanted to see more of Nasir's shadow power。 I would totally recommend this series。 I'd also prefer a terminology guide。 。。。more

sometimes i read a book and wish to write an eloquent and thoughtful review, but i feel so much and so intensely that the thoughts simply cannot be translated into words。 this is one of those books。 i am eternally grateful for the adventure this was。 what was already one of my favorite books with we hunt the flame became one of my most beloved series with we free the stars。 oh, and chapter 113。

This was exactly what I needed this sequel to be。 My heart feels so full and empty at the same time, because I never want this story to end。 This cast of characters has got to be my absolute favorite group of all time I think。 Their relationships with each other are so heartwarming and beautiful to see, the undiluted love they have for each other。 I don't really want to mention any plot stuff to avoid spoilers, but this is just as action-adventure packed as book one, with even higher stakes。 Zaf This was exactly what I needed this sequel to be。 My heart feels so full and empty at the same time, because I never want this story to end。 This cast of characters has got to be my absolute favorite group of all time I think。 Their relationships with each other are so heartwarming and beautiful to see, the undiluted love they have for each other。 I don't really want to mention any plot stuff to avoid spoilers, but this is just as action-adventure packed as book one, with even higher stakes。 Zafira in particular goes on an incredibly complicated moral journey throughout this story that pushed everything forward just as much as the fighting the villain side of the plot did。 I also love that we get more of Lana, Zafira's younger sister, in this one。 The ties between family and friends that have become family are the real star of this book, this series really, and it makes it infinitely more re-readable。 Because you just want to revel in those relationships for as long as possible, to see them interact in the most mundane ways in between battles of life and death。 Trading quips and rolling eyes, they are fighting to restore magic to their world, but also just existing and being themselves with one another。 This sequel stands up to its predecessor, if not exceeds it, and only further cements Faizal as one of the absolute top authors in the YA Fantasy world in my book。 。。。more

Heart-wrenchingly beautiful。 Faizal's command of language and characters is unparalleled。 It has been years since a book has made me cry, laugh, and love in the ways this story did。 Heart-wrenchingly beautiful。 Faizal's command of language and characters is unparalleled。 It has been years since a book has made me cry, laugh, and love in the ways this story did。 。。。more

I'm a big fan of this series。 I didn't like this book as much as I enjoyed the first one。 I feel like our characters progresses backwards in some ways but they did end up re-progressing in the end。 The author keeps you on your toes and there's so much going on。 I love all our old characters and it's nice getting to know some new ones。 I wish there were more books coming but at the same time I feel like it wraps up the series nicely。 I'm a big fan of this series。 I didn't like this book as much as I enjoyed the first one。 I feel like our characters progresses backwards in some ways but they did end up re-progressing in the end。 The author keeps you on your toes and there's so much going on。 I love all our old characters and it's nice getting to know some new ones。 I wish there were more books coming but at the same time I feel like it wraps up the series nicely。 。。。more

This story is super engaging and hard to put down! It's a worthy sequel to We Hunt the Flame, and I love how each member of the zumra is given their chance to shine。 I'm a sucker for found family stories and We Free the Stars does not disappoint。 The worldbuilding is immersive, with character arcs that are beautiful and heartbreaking and above all earned。 My reading time is not as much as I'd like and I had far too many nights where "just one more chapter" ended up being another three or four。 I This story is super engaging and hard to put down! Oh my heart, it’s full , I was so happy to get this sequel, it was everything I hoped for, sure there’s one or two questions it didn’t answer but I can cope。 Returning to these characters was so much fun, I love the banter and I still love Nasir。 I loved the conclusion, the ending they deserve。 All the relationships in this book are developed so well, I just didn’t want this to end。 Fantastic and thoroughly recommended Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

I rarely cry at books。 This book made me cry。 Hafsah Faizal has such an incredibly unique way of writing that is so beautiful and emotional。 The characters in this book truly stole my heart and the plot was thrilling and agonising in the best way possible。 Do yourself a favour and read this book!!

Now we unleash it。 We free the stars, shatter the darkness holding us captive, and return the world to the splendor it once was。" Faizal weaves a tale of honor, love, darkness, fight for equality and betrayal。 You can't escape the emotions that are given to you with each passing page。 There were moments that I was so overcome with how I was feeling that I needed to set the book aside。 The one thing I am always on the watch for is character development and We Free the Stars delivered it。 Can we talk about the zumra and how utterly amazing and perfect they fit together。 Found family is one of my all time favourite tropes/themes。 Seeing this group (Zafira, Nasir, Altair, and Kifah) work together and grow with each other was one of my absolutely favourite moments when reading We Free the Stars。 Also, these books are some of the few books that I can say I actually enjoyed the POV changing multiple times because the flow between each chapter was impeccable。 She was ruin, she was havoc, and she reveled in it。 One of my favourite story arch's would have to be Zafira。 I mean every single one was amazing but oh my god the things Zafira goes through as a human being, unfathomable! In We Hunt the Flame, Zafira is balancing on a teetering edge of good vs。 evil。 The Arz played a huge role in making her who she was as an adult。 It was her comforter。 Darkness and anger had always been with her just as much as the light had。 So starting to see those good vs。 evil lines blur within Zafira in We Free the Stars was only natural to happen。 It also doesn't help that she has a tome that has an entity of itself and is a very morally grey character that doesn't understand right vs。 wrong。There are so many things going on plot wise that I wouldn't be able to express all my thoughts in such a short amount of time。 The plot twists, the constant movement of the story, the things that are revealed it truly is some of the best work in Young Adult Fantasy literature。 There were a few moments in the plot where I was like "that totally is going to happen" and then it never does or the opposite happens and the wildly unexpected comes about。 This is what I want in ALL my reads! And if you are wondering about the romance。 We Free the Stars definitely focuses on love just as much as it does on the plot。 Sometimes in novels we see authors giving up on one (romance vs。 plot) to focus on the other and this is just not one of those authors。 It was just so masterfully done。If you have not read this duology, what are you waiting for?! It truly is an exceptional piece of art with so many parts woven into it to create a master-piece of young adult literature。 。。。more
